It’s time to travel to Ireland to meet #GBambassador Eoin. When we asked him to describe himself in three words, he chose the words competitive and sporting. His friends describe him as punctual đ
Eoin started playing golf in his 20s. His mum & dad played regularly but he was away at school or playing other sports and never quite got round to taking golf up seriously. Eoin started with society golf playing irregularly and rarely on the same course two weeks in a row. Then he joined a nearby golf club (Kilternan) when his eldest daughter was born. That club closed and he moved to Powerscourt Golf Club in nearby Enniskerry. In 2008 he moved his golf club membership once more, this time to The South County Golf Club, now renamed as Lisheen Springs. It is a well-designed and fine parklands course just outside Dublin.
Golf is not Eoin’s only hobby. He also plays a lot of tennis. Up to a few years ago Eoin still considered a good game of tennis better than a good game of golf, but his opinion has shifted more towards golf recently. Eoin adds that this has nothing to do with his ageing knees and ever reducing speed around the court. In addition to playing sports, he enjoys watching all sports, especially when the stakes are high.
Eoin heard about Golf GameBook in early 2010. He started using it among friends and at his golf club â and has never looked back. Eoin is glad that he has been part of the GameBook journey since the beginning, he adds that a lot has changed and improved since then.
When I found GameBook and live-scoring, I really thought it couldnât get better, that this is it. I wasn’t wrong. It has provided endless off-course and on-course entertainment and when friends move clubs or play elsewhere, it has been a fantastic way to stay in touch. Once you have a good number of rounds stored, the statistics become very important.
Eoin’s favorite golf club is his 8-iron. It’s probably the most reliable club in his bag. Eoin has been told that missing a green with an 8-iron or a wedge in your hand is like missing your mouth with a fork. Eoin adds that his favorite golf club could change several times during a round.
We also asked Eoin what is his favorite out of the golf courses that he has played.
Weâre blessed with many great courses in Ireland. For a parklands course, you cannot beat Mount Juliet in county Kilkenny – it has everything for every standard of golf. Druids Glen would be a close second. Iâve never been less than thrilled each time Iâve played it.
For Links golf, Eoin says that any course in the West of Ireland is great, including Co Sligo (Rosses point) or Enniscrone GC. Eoin adds that if the weather is your friend, the west coast is as exhilarating as golf can be. And if the weather is not your friend, stay home. But he recommends anyone visiting to try them out.
Finally, we are really curious to hear who is Eoin’s all-time favorite golfer. He responds that it’s a tough question, but also an easy one. Eoin explains that the new generation of pro-golfers have so many stars and the level of talent is so high that there is rarely a dull moment watching.
But for charisma, talent, passion, influence and pure entertainment, nobody has come close to Seve Ballesteros. Could you imagine how dull the golfing world would be without his contributions – especially to The Ryder Cup?
